From the day your children are born until they graduate from high school, your children spend approximately 15 percent of their waking hours in school. The other 85 percent is spent outside school and most of that time is spent at home. That means that parents are their children's most important teachers. Thank goodness children are naturally curious and love to learn. This makes it easy for parents to use their powerful influence at home to make their child's educational experience at school a successful one. Here are some quick tips parents can use at home to make a big difference in their child's success in school: •· Encourage reading. Encouraging your child to read may be the most important thing you as a parent can do to insure your child's success in school. Go to the library often. It's free and the selections may be better than any bookstore. •· Be a reading role model. Let your child see you reading the newspaper, magazines, books, and catalogs. •· Show your child that you care. Children need to know that they are loved, that you are proud of them, and that ypu are pleased by their accomplishments. •· Find ways to say "I love you" every day - no matter what your child's age. •· Make time to talk to with your children. Really listen to what they say. This builds your child's self-esteem and helps them learn. •· Monitor your child's schoolwork. Talk about their progress and make sure they know that you are proud of their accomplishments. Please remember, Parents are teachers too!
